Poem: Phoenix Ashes

February 24, 2008

Here’s a poem I recently wrote. For those of you who don’t know, a phoenix is a mythic bird (also called a fire bird) that would burst into flames in death, and then was reborn as a chick in the ashes.

My yesterdays were burned by Phoenix fire

Yet in the death’s ash, embers of hope remain

New dreams given birth in despair

Covered with ash, I mourn what was

To remember what will be no more

Then like the Phoenix I’ll rise

With renewed passion glowing red, yellow, orange

Ash will give way to flame

Like the Phoenix I’ll soar again

  1. this is a powerful poem indeed. I feel like a pheonix my self rising from the ashes of disasters of my own making.and this is the last I say of it.(I hope)

  2. Such a beautiful poem. It describes so well what I hope can happen in my life.

I stumbled across your blog a couple of days ago, and I really enjoy reading your writing.

  3. I don’t believe in phoenix’s if you could I would like some proof of phoenix’s.If you can’t get some proof it’s ok. Write Back Soon

  4. It’s a mythical creature…so I don’t think you have to believe in them. Just use your imagination. :)

  5. This poem is beautiful and powerful. My daughter was named for the phoenix because she was my rebirth of hope when all was buried with my fathers passing. Your poem reminds me of the things Ive lost and gained in the last year. I feel like roberta flack listening to some guy singing her life.
    Awesome

  6. Great poem.

  7. I must say that that is an awesome poem; like the phoenix that is my family name, my favorite colors are red, yellow and orange; also like the phoenix I soar my spirit will die but there will be a time that it will rise again; my life is just like the phoenix. I have the name I live the life and now I write.

  10. Thank you for all the positive comments everyone! I never thought a little poem I wrote would be so encouraging to so many people.

Emily, to answer your question, I found it using a google images search. I’ve tried to track down the original artist with little luck. It’s a great picture, isn’t it?

  11. hi amy. found your blog, by doing a search for the perfect poem to describe the thought i was trying to portray to my readers. just wanted to personally say, thank you! for giving words to my feelings.

    many blessings,
    Tracie

  12. Hi…came across your poem as I am trying to come out of the ashes. My past world & self was destroyed, and the phoenix is something that is helping me hold on…for some re-birth therapy. I was curious if I could use it for a blog or myspace (if I do a page). I will certainly give you credit if you give me the name you want me to put as the writer.
    Thanks

    • Rachel,

You can most certainly use it, as long as you give me credit!

      Thanks,
      Amy

      • I wouldn’t use it without being able to give you credit. You most certainly deserve all the credit in the world, and more, for writing such a moving, beautiful poem. It takes a lot for me to really connect with other people’s writings…you deserve all the success in the world for doing such a phenomenal job.
        Thank You so much!
        Rachel
